Tibet continues to be in great turmoil. i listened this morning to Robert Thurman speak about his new book: Why the Dalai Lama Matters. Here is an interview with Thurman: Thurman interview Also today, one of Jim's students takes his final jumps to qualify for the Olympics. It has a been a long, rough road to get to this place in his life. quite remarkable. we went to see Matt jump last month and i was taken aback by how he has transformed his life from the streets/jail/abusive family life to a beautiful person. It has been thru sports and the encouragement of coaches that he has come this far...like Jim, he found a way to channel his anger and hard life through something positive... so i see the great value of opportunities like the Olympics... and then there is human rights. this side of the Olympics can't be ignored. I wanted to open a dialogue here for others to share. What can be our contribution to this event? lil

Programs like, "Athlete wanted" can raise awareness, but it may be asking them to step beyond their current identity. it is to those who remain unaware or uninterested that the either/or decision becomes untouchable. so just raising dialogue may serve them without a need to push into protest or support of the the games...this is a wide open opportunity to contribute in unique ways...

That stand is ... participation and support of the games for the pursuit of a personal goal. - For an athlete, participating for the reason of using the games as a political, public platform, via some of the methods listed in "Athlete wanted," is also taking a stand. That stand is ... participation and support of the games for the purpose of Olympic competition, and also for the opportunity to make a public protest of China's policy regarding Tibet. - For an athlete, both of these reasons for participating are methods of support for the games. - For an athlete, to not compete in the games is to not support the games. The way in which this non-participation affects world consciousness will depend upon the athlete's stature, the number of athletes not competing in solidarity, and the publicity that this non-participation receives. However, given China's past disregard of world opinion regarding Tibet, for an athlete to not compete in order to not support the games will have little impact on China's policy regarding Tibet. - For those who are not Olympic athletes, which is most of the world, what are "the opportunities to contribute in unique ways?" Posts: 2817 (06/30/08 15:36:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	i suppose that some athletes may have the perspective of taking a stand by participating, although i think it is more likely it is us looking in on them who put them in this category...It could take a great deal of time/energy to allow even the possibility of thinking about all this...time/energy taken away from their primal focus. it will be interesting to see if any do speak up/out. i am not expecting this of anyone. The committment to participate usually exceeds 100% focus for an athlete. yogis can do karma yoga. Ideas are on Tilak's webpage: ihanuman other websites: The Tibet Connection maybe others have ideas?

I especially enjoyed the Thurman interview. I also realize that when we speak in either or's, we become embroiled in duality rather than seeking the middle way and encountering the truth. Thanks for prompting me to even consider what I can contribute to this event, as the whole issue had been out of reach of my radar screen This is an extremely important issue not only in terms of human rights, but as Thurman mentions, in terms of the importance of the preservation of the Tibetan Plateau ~ They're the ones who can restore and maintain the Tibetan plateau, their ancestral home, as they have for thousands of years. And it has to be healthy in order to be of benefit to its neighboring regions. It's the water tower of Asia - it's where everybody's water comes from, India, China, Southeast Asia. It's also the source of the wind - the jet stream that rises up out of the plateau, affecting the weather all around the planet. So if Tibet is messed up then the world gets messed up. This is why Tibet should matter to everybody. Thanks for that big cosmic heads up. I will remember that when I am with the elders in Vermont!!! Also the lives affected ~ Jim's student Matt and others like him! I so appreciate you !!! ~ ~ When we consciously take note of and give thanks for what we receive, there is a completion of communication circuits.

Actually, precision in dialogue by speaking in specifics is quite possible. The moment you speak, or write, you are conceptualizing, which is a dualistic activity. According to some teachings the Tibetan Plateau and the Colorado Plateau are very important "breathing holes" for the earth. Just as with in each of us there are solar/lunar, male/female, shiva/sahkti energies that need to be balanced for health, so too the earth depends on the balanced health and well being of the Tibtan and Colorado Plateaus. The Tibetans as well as the Hopis (whose homeland is on the Colorado Plateau) are aware of the importance of their roles as caretakers of the health of the earth in their homeland. Regarding Vermont, I though we had talked about it somewhere ~ sorry. I am going to a traditional Elder's gathering this summer which includes a special Healing Ceremony for Earth. Th e point I wished to make is that the health of the Tibetan Plateau is very important indeed to us all. The Tibetan are the original caretakers and it would be wise to allow them to care only the way they know how. Yes, I hope all feel welcome to share!
