I am wondering if those of you who have a website for yoga can share with me what the cost is. How did you get it started, designed, maintained. There's so many companies out there doing hosting that i'm overwhelmed.
thank you in advance!

Hi Tracey--
I am a web designer as well as a yoga teacher. I find that most people spend waaay to much for hosting, and too little on design. For a yoga teacher's website, no more than $50 per year should be necessary on hosting and domain registry. Let's face it, you are probably not going to have a really high traffic site. The initial investment should mostly be in the design and coding. In deciding how much to pay for a site design, you need to think first about what the purpose of your website is. How much time are you willing to spend updating and maintaining it? I do not recommend designing your own site unless you have a solid understanding of both web technologies and design principles. Your website is only as valuable as the people who visit it. If you design a site without determining how people are going to find it, you may be wasting a lot of money. Template based sites are usually poorly coded and may therefore be difficult for search engines to find and catalog. They also look--well, generic. In web design you can get both crap and high quality for the same price. Make sure you vet your designer thoroughly and don't hire your brother in law who knows computers--knowing computers is not the same as knowing design and friends and family members tend to put your projects on the back burner and they take forever to get done. You want a site that is easy for you to update yourself (have your designer teach you how) and you want it to comply with the latest web standards so that it will last for years and years. If you find someone you want to work with, feel free to let me know and I will check their work for you. Also, anyone who currently has a site and wants it evaluated, just post a link and I will take a quick look. I would love to see them anyway for ideas. Thank you all for your help and inspiration! I went w/godaddy for the domain name and with it comes 5 free pages (with adds on them) but it will give me time to formulate my needs.

Mado,
Your website is beautiful! I would like mine to be more like yours! I recently started a community class at a local church that has grown to two instructors (the second instructor is not on my website yet!) and three classes. I also include other classes I teach on the website. I got one of those templates Years ago, I learned HTML 4, but that's about it. I don't know some of the more complicated stuff that came around later, but I really don't need anything fancy. My website is: www.newburyparkyoga.com Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks. Mary Watson |

Oh, wow. Yeah, you are not getting your money's worth. So, html alone is not going to be enough to code a standards compliant website. These days you need xhtml (very similar to html, without any presentational elements) and CSS (for the presentation). The problem is that the learning curve is such that it isn't worth it for most people to code their own site.
Probably your best bet is going to be modifying a better template. here are some that I've found. This one is free, but will require a little work and does not include hosting. First Page Fitness These are nice, but rather expensive ($25/month) Main Street Sites I think the fourth template on this page could be modified nicely. freewebsitetemplates.com Anyway, google free css templates and there will be lots to choose from. You will need a small amount of technical skill to do this, but can wind up with a professional looking site. Mado |

I searched in vain for a reasonably-priced web designer. It was a horrible experience. Couldn't get anyone to call me back and if they did they were quoting prices in the THOUSANDS of dollars for just a few pages. I'm not coca-cola. So I wound up buying a template and figuring it out myself. It was very time consuming but I didn't feel like I had any other options. I have a good friend who paid $3,000 for a FOUR PAGE website that wasn't very good, in my opinion. It was over-designed. So she had to hire someone else and start from scratch. In my neighborhood there are a lot of people who work from home and most have had unpleasant (and expensive) experiences with web designers, unfortunately. Of course, there are professional folks out there (Mado, I'm sure you're one!) but finding them is another story.
Mado made a good point-- you don't want to spend a lot of money for a low traffic website. I pay $7/month for my web host and my template was very low cost-- under $50. Here's my site: www.HarmoniaHealth.com If you hire someone to design the site for you be sure you learn how to update it yourself--it'll cost too much to have to pay someone to do that all the time. Good luck! kelly |

Hi Mary,
One small suggestion is to change your images to the size they are actually going to display on the screen. For example, the picture on the homepage displays as 400x300, but the original is still 2816x2112. This leads to slower page loads, especially for those with slower internet connections. Beyond that, I agree with Mado that your best bet is to get a better template. You can definitely get more for the money that you're currently paying. But, having said that, what you have now is functional, so I don't know how much time or money it's worth to you to have a pretty site. (I support people making a living, but there's no excuse for a basic website with four pages costing thousands of dollars.) Tilak |

I'm using Bluehost.com and have loved their hosting service.
As far as design goes, I went way cheap - wordpress.com (which can be installed on your site by Bluehost with one click). I tweaked the theme that they already had and added my information. My website is here: bodhi leaf yoga I'd also say that it has been really beneficial to my business. I've gotten many referrals through the web and - when the studio I was working at closed - the web started driving students AND locations to me this month. This summer I'm going to do a site overhaul (probably myself) but this was very, very simple to set up. |

Tilak, I will be sure to make that photo smaller. I also got rid of some of the photos that I didn't think were very necessary.

Yeah, $3000 for a 4 page site is outrageous. I undercharge yoga teachers as a rule. Usually $300-$500 for a 4 page site. I charge more for people who have
more $. Here's two more sites I designed:

Yes I did!
That is the groovy thing about taking care of it myself and not having to wait on someone to have the time, or get the info emailed to him etc. I can play with it whenever I want. r |

Websites and teacher descriptions | ||

Hi all -
I recently designed a website for the studio I teach at. They had no website, and I had been encouraging them to put one up for a few months when they told me they just did not have the time. I'm no expert, but I offered to do it for $250, including setting up the hosting account and two domain names (they gave me their Credit Card to use for that part). I also included quarterly schedule and teacher updates for the next year (I offered to teach them how to do it but they claimed technical ignorance and don't seem interested in doing it themselves). Based on what I'm seeing here, that seems to be below market-value, but I'm certainly not an expert and this was a new studio so they do not have a ton of loot to spend. I also have a regular job and am trying to get started doing some web design for supplemental income, and it seemed like this site would be good experience (I guess this puts me in the category of the family/member acquaintance who some people are recommending against using, but I got this done for them within a week of receiving the materials and think I gave good value for the price). I am looking to improve my web design skills, so I would welcome any feedback. Here's the address: www.exhaleeastbrunswick.com Also, I am relatively new as a teacher (under one year), so was having a hard time formulating my teacher bio when I made the site. I mentioned having studied with Erich while I was in LA (and included a link to the moving into stillness page), and I wanted to make sure this is OK. I will be coming back to LA in August for Erich's teacher training (yeah!). Erich or anyone else - is there some etiquette to mentioning another teacher in one's bio? thanks all! Jeff

I have no design or computer skills for websites, so I just started up a blog through wordpress, and paid the extra $15 per year for the domain address through
them. So instead of oldstoneyoga.wordpress.com, it's just oldstoneyoga.com. They have several templates, and I was able to find one that I liked, and add
all the important info on the side. http://www.oldstoneyoga.com
