Do you use vitamin and mineral supplements? |
Lead | |
|
Or do you think that your food should contain all that you need?

Hi my partner in crime!
Yes, I take extra iron (prone to anemia) and a multi-vite everyday. Eat well, but think I should supplement..... Susan |

Every now and again, when i eat too many bananas, a 'cascara sagrada' comes in real handy

Yes, bananas can be costive. They (as plantains) are good fried with cocunut ice cream. High in potassium.
I take herbs also, but not regularly unless I am working on a specific system. I otherwise try to get "everything" from whole organic unrefined and organically grown live foods (good luck). Occasionally I go on a zinc binge. Two months ago I was on a regular diet of alpha lipoic acid and olive leaves -- yummm, but now I think it's over. I get these weird cravings.... Usually goes away when I have my chocolate fix. I really love fresh young coconuts with a pudding like consistency -- ohh God it gets me so high! Coconut juice is supposed to be exceptionally high in electrolytes. Cold pressed Pumpkin seed oil, flax seed oil (cold pressed) and hemp seed oil all are high in EFAs -- tastes great in salads. |

since i don't eat meat i worry about not getting enough B12. so when i remember i'll take a B vitamin complex. that's about it.
i'd be curious to know if folks here supplement their diet with Aurydevic (sp?) herbs and supplements. |

Dael - do you eat dairy? If so don't worry about the B12 - it is present in dairy. Meg

I take calcium, vitamin C, iron (since I have gone totally meatless I, too, have tended to be a bit anemic - I have pulled back from dairy, though, cause I think it is making me mucous-y - YUCK!)
I also take ginko biloba, acidophilous (especially when I eat breads/pastas, which I find a bit difficult to digest) Vit. E, Flaxseed Oil, selenium, and at night, evening primrose oil- and a partridge in a pear tree (ONLY KIDDING!) yee gads man. I take Triphala and some elixirs from Shiva Rea's "Sevanti" line of ayurvedic products. One for Breathing (I dont have the bottle in front of me or I would list the ingredients) and one for Vitality....Her husband is an herbal doctor ? or something. I must say, the elixirs are fantastic before practice - subtle but noticeable improvements in both aspects. Vitality is not a stimulant...Ill post ingredients when I get them in front of me. Since I am meno PAUUUUUUUUUUUUUSAL I think I need this extra stuff. But I really hate gagging down a bunch of pills. My eating pattern is erratic (I should know better) but hopefully will even out. Thanks for sharing. Om Shanti Health is Wealth Pam |

Well see, Pam, that's a good question. Do we eat vegetarian and healthy? Or just vegetarian. i mean, chips and salsa has no meat - but isn't really *good* for you.
i think it would bother me taking a ton of pills too - so i try to stay away from it. but sometimes, like you, i don't feel my diet packs in all that i need. vitamin and mineral wise i mean - i pack plenty of calories! (I'm a mucosy person too - so i steer clear of dairy. ) |

Gelatin | ||
|
One problem I've encountered (as a vegetarian) is finding vitamins and supplaments that don't have gelatin in them. Almost all of the pills I've seen use gelatin (made from animal fat). So I make sure I get enough protien and B-vitamins in powder form that I add to my smoothies. Yum!! The gelatin may be something to look for if you didn't know about it. It's also in almost all commercial yogurts.
Peace, Tilak |

I go to the health food store and I can find plenty of veggie options there. But, yeah, you can't get those at Kmart. Also, B-12 is almost strictly from animal sources, so you have to look for the multivitamins to be labeled vegetarian, too.

I avoid taking vitamin and mineral supplements as I'm pretty sure I'd have a tendency to eat less healthily if I did. This way I'm obliged to pay attention to what I eat rather than just reach for anything (chocolate bar
One excellent natural source of vitamin B's, especially B12, is tempeh (whole fermented soy food), traditionally eaten in Indonesia. Miso and other fermented soy products also contain B12. Tempeh is easily digestible, providing energy and vitality. My husband and I love tempeh cooked in all sorts of ways, but especially cubed, deep-fried and mixed with quinoa, celery and cilantro (fresh green coriander). Really delish! |

The Amrit Kalash that I personally use can be bought through this link. Along with that, there is some literature and discoveries about this life-enhancing supplement here:

I did a quick search (page by page as the search function is out of action) to find a suitable thread and ended up with this one....
I've been coming across various sources about vitamin D, mostly via e-mail, and the following article dropped into my inbox this afternoon: http://www.drbriffa.com/blog/2009/05/23/could-sitting-in-the-sun-make-you-fitter/ Well worth the read!
