Kapalabhati-- Breath of Fire? |
Lead | |
|
Sorry, I am a bit confused. Is kapalabhati the same as Kundalini Yoga's breath of fire?

Not in my understanding of either of those. Breath of fire, the way I was taught, is very forceful and rapid -- pushing air out & sucking it back in. Kapalabhati, the way I learned it, is quicker, lighter, and the inhalation is effortless - like a bounce-back from the exhale. And then there is Bhastrika, which probably is closer to but maybe not really exactly the same as Breath of Fire. But different folks have different ways.

Nicely put, Karen. That's my experience of it too. I think the Kap breath is also known as "skull shining breath"...is that right? Lil does Kundalini yoga, so maybe she can chime in here too.

Thank you. Perhaps I am confusing Breath of Fire and Bhastrika. They seem very similar.

What I was taught is that breath of fire is the same as kapalabhati and bhastrika is the one with the forceful inhalations and exhalations (as described above for bof).

Kapalabhati versus Bhastrika | ||

Breath of fire is bhastrika done rapidly. Some schools do bhastrika less rapidly, but then do not call it breath of fire.
There exists a few exceptions to this but in general, Bhastrika and Kapalabhati are similar, but different. Bhastrika (bellows breath) is considered a pranayama proper emphasizing conscious and equal inhalation as well as exhalation. It is usually described as forceful regarding the inhalation, however it should never be forced. The least resistance (the more opening) the better. It is definitely heating. Kapalabhati (skull shining) is a hatha yoga kriya (purification practice). It is suitable for all. It is best mastered before practicing bhastrika. It is similar to bhastrika except that the inhale is totally passive. All the emphasis is on the exhalation, thus allowing the lungs to fill up by itself from the vacuum formed by the total emptying of the lungs on the exhalation. That's the general idea, but both are best learned from an accomplished teacher as there are of course many subtle details that may be helpful to implement. JAI MA! |

the only thing i would add is that breath of fire in kundalini yoga is done (sometimes) thruout the practice itself in specific poses (adding the fire element)... lil |

Kelle, to give you a general idea for the difference in sound, kapalabhati (which emphasizes the exhale) will have a more audible exhale, and more silent
inhale; the rate is moderately quick, .5 second exhale, 1.5 second inhale, approximately. Bhastrika (which emphasizes the inhale AND exhale) will have an
equally audible inhale/exhale, at a much faster rate.

I do not recognize this bhastrika in the youtube video. I tend to use this term more synonymously with breath of fire. Although I do not know if breath of fire
takes the exhale solely through the right nostril; although that would make sense with the reference to fire. This said, I do not teach this breath. I do teach
kapalabhati.
Did that man really say to not breath into the belly? Can some who understands this please comment? |

Casey, here is a better tutorial on breath of
fire -- same technique, just better video & audio & more instruction. I really couldn't find anything else on bastrika except some poor
quality videos with people shooting their arms up & down. I've was taught bhastrika as being very similar to breath of fire - big, forceful &
fast. I think you should make a video!

Funny you should say that . . . I'm not quite ready for video yet, but my new website will have a breathing page and I am inserting audio files to assist
with technique, etc., for many of the pranayams. I hope it turns out okay! The website is almost complete, I start doing the little recordings next week.
I'm putting a full 90 minute breathing class in there too..

For the records there are variations of bjastrika. SOme are more rapid than others. What is teh same is thatthe in beath and out breath are equal.
The more common version that I have seen and practiced is just like kaplabhati (using the belly the same way as kapalabhati) except that the breath is equal in and out. It is fairly rapid and one can vary it according to one's desire of course). With that said there is another school of that teaches bhastrika and some other pranayama with the chest/lungs moving only (the belly is held in uddiyana bandha. So as the diaphragm presses down on the inhale instead of the belly pressing out, the chest raises instead.. That variation was done in the video that Karen linked to. Also it was the slow version of bhastrika. They are all good as long as no tension/stress is created. They will have different effects of course.

In "my" school bhastrika means a pranayam composed of 10-30 Kap breaths followed by ujayi pranayama with or without retention. The Kap breaths should
all in all not exceed your normal rate of Kap, i.e. 3*120 Kap means 12 rounds with max 30 Kap in your bhastrika pranayama (or 15 rounds with 20 or 25).
