I always wanted a tattoo, but waited because I knew that it had to be something that meant a lot to me...

Last summer I saw my friend's tattoo, a Shiva's trident (Trishul) on the back of her neck - more symbolic than this one, and smaller. I instantly knew what I wanted. I love the symbolism, the different interpretations of the trinity represented here. I love the concept that Shiva gives out the 3 punishments with his trident. This Trishul for me is pointing at my head, and I hope it goes a long way to defeating the parts of my mind that are not helpful to me.

On the topic of pain, I have a known high tolerance for pain, as mentioned before I once gave a 3 hour talk on Yoga philosophy to trainee Yoga teachers with a newly burst eardrum, literally bleeding from the ear. I agree with Bill, the only way to deal with the sensations that are sharpest is to be in the flow with them. It's difficult during tattooing as my tattooist was only inking for a few seconds then stopping a few - not to give me a break, he did it start to finish, I think it was to get more ink or just his method (I imagined it would have been more constant). I found abdominal breathing helpful, and tried to time my exhale with his contact as I teach my pregnant students to do during childbirth. The outline was the sharpest, didn't notice the spine being worst but he definitely found a sharp spot about the furthest right part of the tattoo. I was only just more than an hour for this one, Bill I can see how with 4-hour sessions it would become such a deep ritual. I also definitely spotted my body going into an anxiety reaction even though I was pretty calm - I always have warm hands and the blood shifted away from my fingers for the first 15 mins.

My daughter was annoyed at this tattoo, as she told my mum, "He's not even getting my name on it!"

I dont think this will be my last, I have at least one more in mind right now...
