Oh Bruce! THANK YOU!!!! It was lovely to see that you had started this thread, and to see your user name here again. Missed you!!!!
You are right...it is indeed a moment of joy and hope. It has been such a very long time - eight grueling years to be exact - since I have felt connected to the folks in power at the helm. Today I feel a collective surge, like we all just plugged into 220, instead of half of us into 110. Now to keep that juice amped up! Best to you this fine globally-aware day, Susan

Yes, thank you, Bruce. It's incredible. It's actually stirring up in me all sorts of emotions and feelings that I haven't felt for a very long
time. Mostly, our government feels like it's of the people and by the people again, rather than of the status quo elite few. I've never, ever before
felt like my vote, my voice, even counted. I've always had a sense of apathy. I feel so hopeful and excited about our country again.
The grassroots aspect of Barack's campain was just amazing. We all came together, through the internet, and got involved on a local level. I'm realizing one voice is a powerful thing. Texas is a McCain state, a red state, through and through...so I casted my vote, but also used my voice in other ways. I made phone calls to voters in North Carolina, a battleground state. It makes me feel like I played a part. Everyone played a part. It was a group effort, a team effort. I really do feel a solidarity...many voices speaking as One. Not only all that, but here in the south, especially, this is just such a racially historic moment. I've been teary all day just thinking about it. I grew up in a very racially prejudiced family. I've been around it all my life, I was taught to hate...essentially. I always knew it was wrong and vowed that when I had children I would teach them to not even see skin color. And they don't. They will say, "That guy in the blue shirt" rather than "That black guy." This is one thing I'm so proud of as a mother to have taught my kids. Skin color is just like hair color to them. But people have fought, people have suffered, died for civil rights. And now, wow, I sit and watch the first African American be elected president...by the people at the grassroots level. What a beautiful moment to watch all the tears streaming down faces last night. The light is being elevated, the love is finding expression and people are finally letting their voice be heard. I feel the collective surge, too, Sri. One people, one planet. I'm just so happy today... |

Oh happy day! Is unity on its way? Congratulations to you all for making it happen.
Shame you can't clone Obama - we could certainly do with him here in the UK! But I think his actions will surely ripple round the world I just keep getting goosebumps everytime I see TV reports, and when I hear people talking about what this means to them. It's just tremendous - and just incredible. blossom2 (blossomed previously but got a bit confused moving over to yuku) |

Hey Bruce,
Thanks, the congratulations are truly in order. I realized yesterday the I can still jump up and click my heels. Haven't felt this way since I can't remember when. (I will be 59 in a few weeks) I wanted to try, but at first thoughts of "I can't" came up, but I did it any way and it felt really great. I didn't realize how much of a drain the politics of fear had affected me the past 8 years. That along with the significance of the longer legacy of racism has left it's mark. As others have said, the emotions are deep. There was a need for me to let out all of the negativity of the old and open up to the ushering in of the new. I am not naive, there will be lots of work, but at least many of us now feel we are a part of the process and we are happy to lend our hands. Good to see your post today, now that we are on YUKU it is easier to miss posts. ~ ~

Is the humor based on media manipulation of perspective or the astonishing difference in perspective that one percentage point can make?

i'm not following...? the 1% point ? part
the answer "humor" was a reply to the question you asked in post 15 (no more no less) in terms of your question above in post 17...i don't have an answer other than to say: i agree media certainly manipulates and people have different perspectives love, rona

it seems like there was greater division during the 2004 election becuz of the way it went down, regardless of the %.
but to say that there is unity is in this 2008 election is to just see it from the winning side. if your candidate lost, then the election is seen as division. if who you voted for won, then it very much feels like unity... i could very much feel from the people i ran into the day after the election, that many weren't feeling the unity. it made me think deeply about what is really going on during this whole process. some of it isn't pretty to admit. it seems that the "i win/you lose" mentality very much plays into unity/division. it is one of the reasons the political scene is very unappealing. it's easier to get beyond division and feel good and work for unity when my candidate wins, otherwise, it's natural to speak to and feel the division. this always leaves 48/49% of people to feel just the way i did when my candidate lost in previous elections. it is so easy to fall into "i'm finally right/they are wrong", yet is this where i really want to hang? do i really need to diminish those who sit on the opposite political seat? how do i remain in politics and still embrace every Being on this planet without the need to feel "i'm totally right/they are completely wrong" otherwise, the cycle just continues. has anyone here reached a place in politics without feeding this cycle? i really would like to hear about it... is there such a thing as enlightened politics? |

Hi Lil,
I think that the basis of unity does not depend upon agreement. Hi Rona, The 1% refers to the content of the cartoons.
